Dark Mode: Shop at Night Without the Flashlight Effect

Late-night meal planning shouldn’t feel like staring into a lightbulb. PlateParrot’s new Dark Mode is easy on your eyes, saves battery life, and looks sleek—perfect for that midnight snack run or planning dinner from the comfort of your bed.

The “Flashbang” Effect

It’s 11 PM. You’re lying in bed, trying to remember if you need milk for tomorrow’s breakfast. You grab your phone in the dark room, open your shopping list app, and—BAM.

A blinding white screen lights up the entire room. You squint, your eyes start watering, and you probably wake up your partner. Grocery apps are usually designed for bright supermarkets, but the reality is that a lot of planning happens when the lights are low. That bright white background isn’t just uncomfortable; it’s a harsh wake-up call you didn’t ask for.

Easy on the Eyes

PlateParrot now fully supports Dark Mode to match your environment. It transforms the interface into a sleek, dark canvas that is comfortable to read even in total darkness.

It’s not just about looking “cool” (although it definitely does). It’s about usability. The text remains crisp and legible without the glare. Your food photos pop beautifully against the dark background. And if you have a modern smartphone with an OLED screen, using Dark Mode can even help save a bit of battery life while you shop.

How It Works

You don’t need to do anything complicated. By default, PlateParrot respects your phone’s system settings.

  • If your iPhone is set to Dark Mode, the app will be dark.
  • If your iPhone switches to Light Mode at sunrise, the app brightens up with it.

Prefer one look over the other all the time? You can override this in the PlateParrot settings. Just go to Settings > Appearance and choose “Always Light” or “Always Dark” to suit your style, regardless of what the rest of your phone is doing.

FAQ

Does it affect my photos?

No. Your recipe photos are displayed in their original full color. In fact, they often look even more vibrant against the dark background.

Will it drain my battery?

On the contrary. If your phone has an OLED screen (like most modern iPhones), Dark Mode actually consumes less power because black pixels are turned off.

Can I set it to turn on automatically?

Yes. Just select “System” in the appearance settings, and PlateParrot will follow your phone’s automatic schedule (e.g., Sunset to Sunrise).
