Auto Activate Units: A List That Adapts to You

Your unit list shouldn’t look like a physics textbook. PlateParrot keeps your interface clean by hiding units you rarely use (like “Ounces” in Europe). But the moment you type “2 cups” for an American recipe, the app automatically wakes up that unit and adds it to your list—saving you from menu digging.

The “Wheel of Doom”

We’ve all seen those unit dropdown menus. You just want to select “Grams.” But to get there, you have to scroll past “Gallons,” “Gills,” “Grains,” and “Grams Force.”

Most apps show you every unit known to mankind, just in case. The result? You spend precious seconds scrolling through a list of 50 options, 45 of which you will never use in your entire life. It’s visual clutter that makes a simple task feel tedious.

A List That Adapts to You

PlateParrot believes your shopping list should be smart, not encyclopedic. When you start, the app looks at your region. If you are in Germany, you see Grams and Liters. If you are in the US, you see Ounces and Cups. The clutter is gone.

But what happens when you find a recipe from abroad? Usually, this would force you into the settings menu to “enable” a foreign unit. Not here. PlateParrot stays clean until you force it to change—simply by typing.

How It Works

It’s the “Magic Wake-Up” feature.

Let’s say your app is set to Metric (Grams/Liters), but you want to make New York Pancakes. You type: “2 cups flour“.

  1. Detection: The app notices you used “cups.”
  2. Activation: It recognizes “cups” as a valid, known unit that was just hidden.
  3. Result: It instantly accepts your input, formats it correctly, and automatically adds “Cup” to your list of active units.

You didn’t have to go to Settings. You didn’t have to search for a toggle. You just typed what you needed, and the app adapted its interface to match your current cooking reality.

FAQ

Can I hide units again?

Yes. If you used “Ounces” once and never want to see it again, just go to Settings > Units and toggle it off.

Does it work for custom units?

Yes. If you created a custom unit called “Mug” but disabled it, typing “1 Mug coffee” will reactivate it instantly.

What about units like “Teaspoon”?

Common kitchen units (Teaspoon, Tablespoon) are usually active by default everywhere, as they are universal.
